About Us

Myanmar Region of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)

The St. Aloysius Gonzaga Institute of Higher Studies (SAG-IHS)

It was established in 1998 by the Society of Jesus at the invitation of the Archbishop of Taunggyi, Most Reverend Mathias U Shwe, D.D. The Institute is an apostolic work of the Myanmar Region of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It is named after the patron saint of youth, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, who renounced his position within a powerful and wealthy family in Renaissance Italy to enter a life of service of God and people as a Jesuit at the age of 17.

Serving since 1998

At its inception in 1998, SAG functioned primarily as an English Language Institute.

It has provided English Language classes to both adults and school-going children over the years.

The adult classes are called Communicative English Language Program (CELP) and children’s classes are known as the ‘Young Learners’ Program’ (YLP). These programs continue to this day.

After 5 decades, a democratically elected government assumed office in 2010, which brought a lot of changes in our country and our institution. SAG began experimenting with and implementing a three-year full-time course, Diploma in Education for post-matriculation students, the majority of whom were enrolled in the state-run University of Distance Education.
