About Us

Myanmar Region of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)

The St. Aloysius Gonzaga Institute of Higher Studies (SAG-IHS)

It was established in 1998 by the Society of Jesus at the invitation of the Archbishop of Taunggyi, Most Reverend Mathias U Shwe, D.D. The Institute is an apostolic work of the Myanmar Region of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It is named after the patron saint of youth, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, who renounced his position within a powerful and wealthy family in Renaissance Italy to enter a life of service of God and people as a Jesuit at the age of 17.

Serving since 1998

At its inception in 1998, SAG functioned primarily as an English Language Institute.

It has provided English Language classes to both adults and school-going children over the years.

The adult classes are called Communicative English Language Program (CELP) and children’s classes are known as the ‘Young Learners’ Program’ (YLP). These programs continue to this day.

After 5 decades, a democratically elected government assumed office in 2010, which brought a lot of changes in our country and our institution. SAG began experimenting with and implementing a three-year full-time course, Diploma in Education for post-matriculation students, the majority of whom were enrolled in the state-run University of Distance Education.

Partnership with AdDU

The curriculum for this full-time, three-year, course of studies was designed and carried out in partnership with Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), a Jesuit University in the Philippines.
The AdDU assisted with implementing the curriculum by sending its faculty members to teach at SAG and by providing scholarships to SAG teachers to complete their graduate/post-graduate studies at AdDU. Special mention is to be made of the Cardoner Volunteers of the AdDU, who since 2016 have sent volunteers to teach at SAG. The AdDU awards a Diploma in Education to students who successfully complete a three-year course of studies at SAG.

Partnership with CSW

In 2016, SAG entered into a partnership with the College of Social Work (CSW) of the University of Utah, U.S.A. The CSW was integral development of SAG by facilitating community partnerships for the Outreach Program of SAG, engaging Faculty members in research networks, incorporating SAG students and faculty, and offering the opportunity to do a nine-month online post-diploma Certificate in Social Work Case Management.

Collaboration with JWL

SAG has also started collaborating with Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL), the Geneva-based organization which offers the Global English Language Program (GEL) for our Pre-Diploma Academic Preparatory Students. For other diploma students and teachers, JWL offers courses like Learning Facilitator, Teacher Training, Peace Leader, Eco-Tourism, Creative Writing and Design, and further a four-year degree program in Sustainable Development.

Meanwhile, SAG continues to work on developing its curriculum to integrate both teaching and social work, with a view to expanding the current program into a full-time, four-year interdisciplinary degree program.
